Two Thousand and Twelve!
The Mayan Calendar is so completely unlike our own that I don’t even know where to start in explaining it – nor could I with any authority – but you should know that their calendar system actually uses three dating systems in parallel: the Long Count, the Tzolkin and the Haab… and that only the Haab remotely resembles our own and is based on a year that we’re familiar with. It was mostly used for things like farming and tax collection purposes, but was not what the entire structure of their civilization revolved around the way the Gregorian calendar is for us.
It is their Long Count calendar that involves the 2012 date and is so widely misunderstood and misinterpreted as some sort of doomsday prediction. It is based on the elevation of consciousness and before you just shrug that off as new-age nonsense, take a look at how accurate it has been in mapping our entire history…
Even the great pyramids these people built were in reverence of this system. They were built with nine levels, each representing stages of consciousness that occur exponentially faster as you go up the levels. The bottom level, representing cellular consciousness, could be said to have started at the Big Bang and took 16.4 billion years before basic animals existed on Earth, taking us up to the next level, the mammalian consciousness cycle, which lasted only 850 million years before the first monkeys started to exist in families. That brought us the third level, the familial cycle. I won’t go through all of them, but they then mapped every level of consciousness expansion on this planet from the first humans, which eventually developed tribes, then spoken languages, written languages, then nations, laws, to industrialism… and everything in between. All of these developments and their catalysts were predicted to exact dates through this Mayan system can – and have – now been corroborated with scientific data and matched to historical data.
Currently, we’re on the 8th level. We entered it in 1999… and as you struggle to keep up with technology and everything from Facebook, YouTube, Twitter and mapping your trip on your iPhone to collapsing social structures and economies and political corruption being exposed daily… just know that all of these things being bombarded into your consciousness is keeping us exactly on schedule with the system developed by the ancient Maya. In February of 2011 we go to 9th and final level, which only lasts until December 2012… but does NOT necessarily imply utter annihilation beyond that. It only suggests that we’ll shatter paradigms and enter a level of universal consciousness that throws us far beyond anything we’ve accustomed ourselves to in the past. To some that kind of evolution sounds – and will be – horrifying. Others welcome it. These are things predicted in many other systems of belief, too. It’s not unique to the Mayans… they just gave it a date we love to cling to.
I’m no expert, that’s for sure. I’ve only given the broad strokes here and, hell, I’ve barely scratched the surface. If you’d like to actually learn more about it yourself, I suggest the works of John Major Jenkins, Ian Lungold, Carl-Johan Calleman, Barbara Hand Clow, and maybe even José Argüelles and Daniel Pinchbeck. Many of these scholars have conflicting ideas and all should be read with some discretion, of course. This seminar that Ian Lungold gave in Canada back in 2003 is lengthy, but thorough and a great place to start if you’re interested in learning what the Mayan calendar is really about.
Or, of course, you could just wait for the undoubtedly inaccurate, strike-fear-into-your-heart interpretation that Hollywood plans to perpetuate among the uninformed masses this fall…
